Zip Ties

The most ambitious photography project yet with design company Actual.

The most ambitious photography project yet with design company Actual.

One of the trademark products from Oakland-based Actual has been the clever Zip Tie.  Previously only available in a grey classic cut, our task was to introduce both a selection of new colors and a skinny complement. Inspired in part by my From the Weeds series, we called upon local friends and colleagues to model the tie while performing their creative pursuits: a painter / an engineer / a musician / an architect.

Next up...handbags!

Actual Lamps

The local product photography continues. Our most recent subject: LAMPS!

The local product photography continues.  Our most recent subject: LAMPS!

Oakland-based design company Actual features a line of lamps it calls the Stola, and they have just rolled out a large table lamp version. Made with recycled P.E.T., these objects are meant to have a dynamic sculptural presence when illuminated.  Below are a few of my personal favorite takes.  See the official selections at the source: www.actualsf.com.  Profiled at Inhabitat.com.

Next up: Zip Ties!

East Bay Open Studios

Since 1979, East Bay artists have thrown open the doors of their studios in concert to welcome visitors to tour their work spaces and buy art directly from the maker during Open Studio weekends.

Since 1979, East Bay artists have thrown open the doors of their studios in concert to welcome visitors to tour their work spaces and buy art directly from the maker during Open Studio weekends.  For this -my first!- Open Studio event, I will be assisting artist Jane Norling, my earliest ambassador to the Bay's art scene when we arrived here last autumn, at her newly reopened studio on Lakeshore Ave in Oakland.

After a frenzy of inventory taking and packing, we temporarily moved Jane out of her space for a building renovation in the late winter. The work is complete, and now she is back just in time for this annual event! The paint on the walls is fresh and things are still being unwrapped, but there is lots of remarkable and diverse work to be seen.  (I am especially partial to some new small paintings that bring together Jane's digital work and painting in an interesting new way...)Jane's studio-mate Judy Levit will also be present showing her work, so it's two for the price of one!

Details below...

Who: Jane Norling | Judy Levit
What: East Bay Open Studios
When: June 8th & 9th, 11a - 6p (final weekend!)
Where: 3298 Lakeshore Ave, 2nd Floor, Oakland

Since moving out to Oakland, I have been doing arts consulting work with some really great local artists.  On Thursday, a solo exhibit for one of those artists opens along with the premier of the exhibit catalog, which I designed!

YEAR IN COLOR/LUNAR CYCLES: New Work by Carol Ladewig
SLATE contemporary, 473 25th Street, Uptown Oakland
Opening Thursday, February 28th, 6-8p
Show runs through March 3rd

In conjunction with the exhibit, the book Painting Time has been published, for which I did the design work and some of the photography.  The book is both an exhibit catalog and a wider examination of the featured work within the context of Carol's art practice as well as modern art history.  The text contains essays by art critic DeWitt Cheng and SLATE director Danielle Fox.

Come check it out!  And be prepared for COLOR.

Now showing at Cornell Library's Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections!
June 7, 2012 - Oct 29, 2012
Hirshland Gallery, Carl A. Kroch Library

Through a remarkable array of rare books, manuscripts, and artifacts from the collection of Jay (’77) and Eileen (’76, ’78) Walker, this exhibition showcases imagination as a driving force throughout history and celebrates the adventure of discovery, learning, and creativity. Collecting Imagination features such treasures as an original Soviet Sputnik alongside a U.S. Vanguard satellite, a cuneiform cone from 2000 BC, and a leaf from the Gutenberg Bible. This exhibit marks the first time an extensive selection of objects from this unique private collection has been on public view.

Jillian Piccirilli ’08 formed a close relationship with a woman she’ll never meet: Alison Mason Kingsbury, an accomplished artist, dedicated Ithacan and wife of Cornell historian and professor Morris Bishop.Alison Jolly, the artist’s daughter, began working with Piccirilli in 2008 to create a complete catalog of her mother’s work. The catalog grew into a book, “The Art and Life of Alison Mason Kingsbury,” published in 2010 by Cornell University Library.
