Turn to the sun…

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

As the dark Nordic winter recedes, the sun’s rays stretch longer and warmer into the Scandinavian lands. The people emerge from their homes and turn their faces to the sun, letting it soak into body and soul.

To turn to the sun, or solpåvänd, was a concept that made a deep impression on my mother during her graduate student tenure in Sweden in the 1980s. It has served as our inspiration for an ongoing photography series featuring her as my model. Whenever we are reunited, we try to observe the practice of turning towards the sun together.
